Why should you buy preloved clothes?

Why should you buy preloved clothes?

Preloved - saving pennies and the planet.

Did you know... It takes up to 10,000 litres of water to make a single pair of jeans. The UK produces 206.456 tonnes of textile waste in a year. According to 'Wrap', the waste charity, more than 300,000 tonnes of used clothing goes to landfill in the UK every year. Wrap have also said that 5% of the UK's total annual carbon and water footprint came from clothing consumption. While textiles degrade in landfill, they release the greenhouse gas, methane.

I don't know about you, but we find these statistics staggering and is the reason we are so passionate about reusing and recycling clothes.

A study of 620 items disposed of in a 6 month period by 16 households in Norway, found that the average lifespan of a garment was 5.4 years, but only actively worn for a period of 4 years.

However, baby clothes, children's wear and maternity products are used for a much shorter period of time and are usually in near to perfect condition after being used by one family. It only makes sense for them to be used again and again until they are not longer fit for purpose.

At Lily and Oscar, we sell secondhand baby, children and maternity clothes, at affordable prices. The clothes come to us, are washed, ironed and de-bobbled, to be made as 'good as new' again.

We are so pleased to see and hear of more people buying preloved products, as the more people that do, the bigger impact it has on our planet.

We offer customers the opportunity to sell their clothes to us. You can find more details about this on our website at www.lilyandoscar.co.uk/pages/sell-your-clothes.

As always, we would love to hear from you and any ideas you have on how we can be more sustainable with our lifestyle choices.

Thanks for reading.
